San Diego AEP Chapter Events
|
|
For the first time in several years, prices for the San Diego AEP luncheons will increase for members, nonmembers and students. Luncheon prices will be $30 for members, $40 for nonmembers, and $15 for student/unemployed members. The restructured pricing reflects the increase in luncheon costs and our goal of providing improved luncheon programs. We want to continue to provide our members with informative and enjoyable luncheons, a fun and exciting annual member appreciate event, and work more monthly events such as educational field visits and member mixers into our annual event planning for 2012. If you have any ideas for luncheon or special event programs, please contact either of our Co-Vice Presidents of Programs, Corinne Lytle Bonine (corinne.bonine@ch2m.com, 619-687-0110, ext: 37265) or Vanessa Brice (vanessab@helixepi.com, 619-465-1515). We always welcome new ideas!
We are also implementing an electronic RSVP form for 2012 to make event registration easier and more efficient. In addition, surveys will be sent out electronically to attendees after each luncheon and special event instead of the half-page paper surveys we’ve previously used to promote sustainability and reduce paper use.

Please join the AEP San Diego Chapter for our February luncheon event at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar on 02/23/2012, featuring a presentation by Mike Grim from the City of Carlsbad and Michael Sweesy from Dudek on the benefits and challenges of Natural Communities Conservation Planning (NCCP) preserve management, permitting, and mitigation.
Over the past 15 years, local jurisdictions in the San Diego region have prepared landscape level conservation plans under the California Department of Fish and Game’s NCCP program, such as the Multiple Species Conservation Plan (MSCP) and Multiple Habitat Conservation Program (MHCP). These plans were intended to facilitate permit processing for projects with native habitat impacts by streamlining preservation design considerations, CEQA analysis and mitigation, and consultation with federal permitting agencies.
Mike Grim is a Senior Planner at the City of Carlsbad with over 20 years of experience in land use planning and permitting and CEQA review. For the last six years, he has overseen the implementation of the city’s Habitat Management Plan. He also serviced as Vice Chair on SANDAG’s Environmental Mitigation Program (EMP) Working Group. Michael Sweesy is a Principal and registered landscape architect at Dudek where he leads the Habitat Restoration Group. Over his 18-year career at Dudek, he has designed and implemented numerous habitat restoration projects for wetlands creation and enhancement of habitat.
Date: Thursday, February 23, 2012 Time: 11:45 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Location: Hilton San Diego/Del Mar, 15575 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar, CA 92104 Cost: $30 Members, $40 Non-members, $15 Student/Unemployed Members -- cash or check payment only

Topics to be covered will include: selection of field guides and binoculars, the basics of field identification of birds, common San Diego area species, attracting backyard birds, associating birds with their habitats and habits, seasonal changes, separating out similar species, common birding terms, an introduction to bird songs, at least two all-morning field trips, lots of color slides, and much more. The four lecture sessions will be held at the Tecolote Nature Center, off of I-5 just east of Mission Bay.
